Editorial Review
Medela Pump in Style is the CEO of breast pumps. Designed for moms who pump several times a day, especially those returning to work, the pump is packed in a handsome, discreet black shoulder bag. No one but another mother will ever know what lurks beneath the surfaceâ¦that is, a very good, powerful pump complete with adjustable speed and vacuum control, battery pack, AC adapter, extra bottles with lids, bottle stands, "PersonalFit" breastshields, removable cooler carrier with ice packs, bottle holder, extra storage pockets, and a built-in picture frame (looking at your baby while you pump increases milk flow--strange but true!). Pumping will not be the most pleasant experience of motherhood, but this sophisticated pump makes it convenient and relatively easy--and virtually hands-free (once itâs attached)! Warning: be prepared for the question from the uninitiated (non-mothers), "I love your bag--where can I get one just like it?" --Emilie Coulter

Lives up to the hype! (2010-03-11)
So when I was originally shopping around for a breast pump, I came across the reviews online for the Pump In Style Original. Obviously everyone loves it. I just couldnt justify spending almost 300 dollars on it when I didnt really know how well it would work, or if I would even use it that much.
When my son was born, we had a little bit of a hard time, so the lactation consultant suggested that while he was learning to latch that I start pumping. So I sent my husband to buy a pump to Target with instructions on which one to get (not the Medela- $$$). He came home saying that not only did they not have the one I wanted, but that he got me the Evenflo model. It was much cheaper, but it didnt matter much because I was only using it occasionally.
Fast forward to January when I got a job and needed to pump at work. The Evenflo went down to one pump pretty quickly, and for the last two months, I had been using one pump, one breast at a time, 3-4 times at work and once at night. I had originally decided that I would extend the breastfeeding to 12 months, and possibly pump to donate to a milk bank. However, usually it would take 35-50 minutes to get 3-4 ounces. And the entire office new I was pumping because the Evenflo was loud. And since it took soooo long to do, I often didn't empty the entire breast. So my supply wasn't over abundant.
This week, the last pump began to go. So I bought the Pump In Style. I bought it used (I know you're not supposed to). I did buy a new set of accessories, so I feel pretty good about using it (when you see the distance that milk would have to travel to get to inside of the machine and "infect it", you'll laugh.)
Its fantastic. I love it. I just pumped four ounces in about 12 minutes. I am hoping to ramp up the supply so that we can go completely off of formula. The fact that you can adjust the strength of the sucking AND the speed is a plus... you can mimic how breast feeding goes (fast and shallow at first, but then deeper and slower later). It has a battery pack, so theoretically, I guess i could use it in the car. The bag is kind of plain and boring, but has plenty of room for ice packs, bottles, etc. Also has several pockets for keeping milk bags, a snack, etc.
I highly recomend this pump... it really is worth the price. Especially if you are going to pump a lot. The cheapter pumps are ok if you are pumping once a day or so. But if you're pumping more, be prepared to have to replace a cheap pump.
The Best (2010-02-28)
I bought my Original Pump In Style in 2004 before the birth of my 1st child. Little did I know then how much I would be using it ! Since my son was born with a heart defect, I was never able to make breastfeeding work for me. Instead, he was fed a breastmilk-only diet for his 1st 9 months expressed using this pump. I have had 2 other children since then and have used this same pump almost as often as I did with my 1st child (since I work outside the home). This pump has never had any problems even with constant use.
A Word About This Pump's Breastshields (2009-08-21)
I know that this particular model has been discontinued, but I thought that my experience could help Moms who use other Medela models as well.
I (like many others who wrote in their reviews that they couldn't get enough milk while using this pump) was very frustrated and called our lactation nurse. She asked me to bring the pump to her office where she watched me use it and said that the breastshields (those "funnel" looking parts) that came with my pump were just a tiny bit small for me. The nurse gave me breastshields in a bigger size and I haven't had any problems with pumping ever since.
If you check Medela website, you will see that their breastshields come in several different sizes. If you are having problems similar to mine, check with your nurse. The wrong size might be the case, just like it was with me.
New mommy (2008-12-28)
I am a new mommy but my baby is now six weeks old and I love this machine. It is so convenient, quick and easy to use. My friend stopped pumping after a few weeks because she owned a manual Avent manual breastpump and was completely discouraged over how much time it took to pump two ounces. I really can't complain with the Medalla. It has made my life so easy that once I put the bottles in the refrigerator, my mother and law and husband can feed the baby when I am asleep. Since it is my milk I don't feel guilty. Seriously I am absolutely pleased with this pump since it allows me to go out, live life and always have bottles ready. Also, I accidently burnt my bottles and breastshields by over boiling them but thank God that every target and babies r us has the parts for the breastpump which make these easy to find and convenient. If you are seriously considering giving your baby breastmilk I definitely recommend you get one of these. Your baby will thank you later. My baby eats at least 3 oz every two hours but thank God I always have anywhere from 7-12 bottles in the fridge at a time. This is due the convenience and dicipline to pumping with the breastpump. Ladies if you consistently pump you will receive more milk. Please don't give up.
